If the hat fits .....

Grace Lace BeretI’ve never been much of a hat person. This is because I have a messy mop of curly hair and I always end up looking like some kind of crazy-haired clown when I wear a hat. Also, my sisters and I were all graced with slightly-larger-than-average head circumferences (it's a Sparling family trait) so finding hats that fit has always been quite a difficult task.

But after Lynne made me my hat, scarf and gloves set for my birthday I discovered just how cosy and beneficial a hat would be for the cold Cambridge winter. It's always extra-chilly there - I think it must be something to do with the flatness and openness of the landscape. Anyway, I decided to have a go at making a slouchy beret. If I looked like a bit of a tit in it I could always give it away, right?

I pootled about for a bit on Ravelry and I found a fab pattern by Elizabeth Eisenstein for a hat named 'Grace Lace Beret' and then I set to work with some stash yarn called Patons Orient which is a midnight blue colour with a very subtle shimmer to it. The hat was really quick to knit and in two evenings I was done. I was pleasantly surprised when I tried the finished beret on. It fits, I don’t think I look like too much of a clown and it’s toasty warm. Bonus!

Grace Lace BeretSo if you're looking for a hat pattern for yourself or for some Christmas gift knitting then I totally recommend the Grace Lace Beret pattern. It's great. So great in fact, I’ve already cast on for another one!

Maybe I am a hat person after all …..

NOTE : Apologies for the slightly blurry self-taken photographs. Always a tricky task.
